The Indian education system, particularly in higher education, has consistently been under the spotlight for various reasons. Post-independence, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the groundwork for India’s development with a strong emphasis on learning and education. His vision, rooted in scientific temper and rational thinking, underscored the importance of an educated populace in national development. Nehru championed the establishment of Indian Institutes of Technology, aiming to produce internationally trained technical leaders for independent India.

Even before independence, notable figures like Shri Visvesvaraya, revered as the first engineer of India, made significant contributions. Today, Engineer’s Day is observed in his honor. India has seen the rise of many engineers, including E Sreedharan, known as the Metroman of India, who have played pivotal roles in shaping the nation.

In the realm of higher education, particularly in core engineering areas, Kerala has recognized the untapped potential within its resources. Over the past few years, the state has made conscious efforts to build a knowledge economy, leveraging both local and non-resident talent. However, there is a need for a paradigm shift in academic institutions to align curricula with the latest industry trends, especially in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

While efforts have been made to incorporate industry-relevant modules, they often lack priority and are considered elective or add-on programs. Given the rapid pace of technological advancements, consistent investment and effort are required from multiple levels, including universities, professors, and lab authorities. Restructuring course structures using the latest technology is essential to equip students with the skills needed to meet industry requirements.

In the context of the digital construction industry and Building Information Modeling (BIM), the demand extends beyond working professionals to include startups developing software, energy-efficient design consultants, wastage-free construction contractors, and advanced operation and maintenance service providers. The current scarcity of resources in this field presents a significant opportunity for students pursuing architecture, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering to invest in digital construction and BIM over the next 10-15 years.

BIMLABS, as a finishing school, has consistently placed its trust in these technologies, investing substantial time and resources each year to educate students about the vast opportunities in this domain. The institution has collaborated with industry leaders such as Autodesk, Bentley Systems, and Trimble, IGBC, ISHRAE taking a positive approach towards academic initiatives in various institutions.

Through engagements like the India Design Challenge 2018, BIM Summit, National Level FDPs, and workshops at esteemed institutions, BIMLABS has highlighted the relevance of the latest technologies in the student community. The institution has also forged partnerships with various educational institutions, providing tie-up training programs, knowledge-sharing sessions, and placement drives.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, BIMLABS extended its reach by connecting with numerous educational institutions across India, supporting students in meeting their academic requirements, including projects, internships, and research paper submissions. In 2023, BIMLABS formed a dedicated team to engage with academic institutions globally, offering technical programs tailored to post-graduate and graduate students.

Under the leadership of Mr. Prijith P, BIMLABS’ Academic Team actively collaborates with faculties passionate about innovation and technology. Regular Faculty Development Programs are conducted to empower educators as role models for students. The institution also connects with academicians, onboarding them as consultants or regular staff members to ensure a seamless blend of technology, theoretical knowledge, and engineering teaching skills, ultimately guaranteeing 100% placement for BIMLABS students.
